The grand-opening weekend of the Panaoramic Lift heading up Parsenn Bowl created many mixed emotions between locals. I guess she'll work out in the long-run, though the old Timberline Lift will be missed - well, the loooong lift lines won't be I guess...
How could I fail to mention that the Panoramic Express holds the record for elevation reached by a 6-person chair - 12,060 ft.

Winter Park opened its 2007/2008 ski season recently with a base of about 1/4" of snow. Great job snowmaking department... Copper blew you away yet again considering % trails open. Certainly one of the more disappointing opening days in memerable years for sure. Lets hope the snow picks up soon!

Jim Creek Trail

A rainy-day hike took us up Jim Creek Trail near the Winter Park Ski Resort, with my brother, Mike and Lori along for the ride (er, hike). Due to the protective sheltering trees the entire way, Jim Creek was our best bet this day due to the nasty early morning weather. BTW: Mike, a former Grand County local, brought his new wife out to Colorado for their honeymoon.

Caribou Pass Hike

The Caribou Pass Trail is a great 4-5 hour hike that provides the user with stunning views and oxygen levels one would expect to experience around 11,819 ft above sea level. The Caribou Pass hiking trail forms about 1 mile past the Junco Lake trail head which also is the starting point for the Columbine Lake Trail and a pass-through for the Continental Divide Trail (CDT).
Caribou Pass is named for a road that was built over the divide - well, only halfway up from the east side of the divide. It turns out that funding ran out and only half of the stretch between Boulder and the Fraser valley was formed. At any rate, the hiking to Caribou Pass was very rewarding and recommend it to anyone looking for a simple day jaunt.

Roger's Pass, Colorado

I went on a short day hike to Roger's Pass along the Continential Divide in Winter Park, CO with Adrianne and Webster recently. Started late and because of that, the clouds chased us off right as we made the destination.

Heart Lake, which is just on the east side of the divide, can be seen in a few of the pictures below. Wish I had the energy and the time to catch the large trout living in it... Though, I wasn't up for the climb back up a steep cornice (Webster was up for it though).

Corona Pass or Rollins Pass is the service road which privides access to the trailhead. This road is a defunct railroad passage from the early 1900's - pictures and more history of Corona Pass to come later.

West Water Canyon, August 2006

The Columbine Lake hike is a classic 6 mile round trip loop through various high-alpine terrain features. Below are some photos of your 'standard' Winter Park day journey.
Fortunately, I was able to sling along my no non-sense fly fishing rod for this hike. Though, the cutthroat trout I saw from the shore-line did not end up on my hook.

I went for a short day-hike out near Hot-Sulphur Springs, CO to a place called Elk Mountain. Great views of the entire Grand County can be had from the top of this peak.

We headed up for short am hike towards Devil's Thumb to stretch the legs on a day off from work. Here are some of the results.

Back-log Snow Report Fiesta

Starting with a some photos that were taken from a weekend trip in February (I believe), I'm attempting to document the remaining portion of my 2005/2006 ski season.

So here's some photos from a trip that took place on or around the weekend of the February 25th at the Winter Park resort. Lots of snow has fallen in the hills of the Fraser Valley up to now - what a season! Funny thing, not much powder fell much past this date. A very dry March and April proceeded the clock-work like February weekend down pours. As always, here are some results from a classic Winter Park ski weekend:

Had an interesting weekend of skiing at Winter Park. Saturday weather: snowy, cold, 4" of fresh powder. And not the heavy cement that i'm used to, we're talking cold fluffy pow that usualy falls in December.
Sunday, however, was more what I was expecting. mid 50's with lots of spring skiing conditions. My kind of weather for tailgating. Oh yea, and lots of mogul runs on the Jane.

Winter Park with the Black and Gold

Not much to report on Saturday the 21st of January regarding snow conditions, but the crowds were out in full force. Oh yea, that’s because there happened to be this one insignificant AFC championship game between the Donkeys and the best team in the world – the Pittsburgh Steelers! Since the game was on Sunday, I really only wanted to ski on Saturday (along with every other yahoo from Denver thinking the same). Pretty crowded… yuk.
Anyways, I met up with my co-worker Ana and her hubby Andy – they both snowboard, however, they rip. I dragged them down some pretty crazy black bump runs on the Jane because it’s where all the good snow accumulated from a nice week of dumpage. Suck it up I told them, and they followed! We ended up having a really fun time despite the busy lift lines.
After a few hours, I headed back down the mountain for a Saturday evening pre-football fiesta at the Hofbrau – Colorado Steeler headquarters.
I think I have a few pics stuck on my digi cam; I’ll post em later if I end up with any worthy shots.

Another Winter Park Ski Report

Days 17 and 18 seemed to roll by with the quickness this weekend at the Winter Park resort. OK snow combined with warmer temps made for a fun weekend. I love this time of year because my legs are in prime condition which allows me to stop less and ski more. Duh. So now that I’m skiing most of the day with only 1 beer/lunch break; time certainly seems to speed up :( Monday’s… yuk.

WP/MJ had it goin on as usual during the 14th of January. I met with an eFriend of mine, Danno, and skied most of the day on Saturday mainly over on the Mary Jane bumps. BTW, sorry about dragging you down Jeff’s Chute… we seemed to find every rock imaginable on the steep double-black face. Though, with the expected snow on the way for this coming weekend, the Chuttes area on the Jane will certainly be a killer time soon enough.

Now that a really sweet snow-packed base has had time to set up, Winter Park has decided to fire up the Snowcats for some overtime grooming of runs that usually are a bit bumpy for this time o year. Yep, that’s right folks; all the baby boomer locals (and Texans) have complained loud enough to make WP/MJ officials smooth out things to make it easier for them to ski… whatever. Let the pillaging begin.
The 18th was a fun morning. Only skied about 2 hours because i had to run back to my bro's to watch the Steelers beat-down the Colts! What a game. Denver - you better watch out when you meet up with the Stillers!

Here’s a half groomed picture of Engledive that lives on Winter Park side of the mountain. BTW, I’ll at least give that to em… they only groom half the run in most cases. But why did they have to groom over my favorite skiers-left line off the Prospector Lift? Given.

Telluride Trip Report

My first long-distance ski trip of the 05/06 ski season directed me towards the Uncompahgre Wilderness of the Telluride mountain region in Southwestern Colorado. Having never driven past Glenwood Canyon on I-70 during daylight hours, I was really looking forward to the drive out west near Grand Junction and then directly south towards Montrose and finally through Box Canyon into Telluride.

Getting there took a few hours, however, was totally worth it even with $2.34 gas prices. On the other hand, snow conditions at Telluride sucked to say the least. Not that I didn’t enjoy the mountain, I’m just saying that the southern resorts have gotten the shaft all year. Yet another reason why a bad snow year at Winter Park is a good snow year anywhere else. Anyways…The steeps through the trees and the amazing views of the surrounding mountain ranges easily made up for the not-so-favorable icy/crud skiing conditions. See for yourself below.

New Years' Report VII

Things started out a bit foggy (thanks Meg and Lou) at Breckenridge Saturday morning - the last day of 2005. It didn't help that things didn't turn out all that hot at the bottom of lift whatever a the base of Breck during our arrival; it took about 20 minutes to get on the chair. Welcome to Summit County Colorado.
Things got better from there on out though. Chair 6 runs were goin off, Horseshoe Bowl, Ore Bucket area; all were just loaded with really fun snow that seemed to not track out as fast as I thought for how many people were scanned.
Apparently, my digi cam was not playing well with me, or maybe it was the other way around. I failed to take any pictures due to a low battery issue on my $50 best eBay purchase ever. Sorry folks. I'll get back to Breck one of these days to take pictures of the famous Imperial Bowl super quad lift (over-rated, sorry it had to be said).

I almost forgot...
Sunday and Monday were both spent back at the home mountain of Winter Park. Not much new snow to report except for the fact that the foggy routine continued. Yea, continued in my brain. It was not fun driving 2 hours the day after new years - if you know what I mean. Also no pictures were taken because I didn't figure out that the cam crapped out until I got home from the 3 day weekend. Not to worry though, Telluride is coming up next. Please check back soon.

Over Christmas, I was able to get up on the mountain a coupla days – Saturday and Monday to be exact. Here’s what I found…

It turns out that I can’t find the perfect bump run – It appears as though I’m addicted to them all…
However, I’m glad that I reacquainted myself with runs called Brakeman and Coupler (both on the Mary Jane side). Yea, I know, these bump runs rock, though I’m not sure what took me so long to get back on them. See, I believe the last time I skied these two examples were way back during my first season – circa 2000. At any rate, I’m upset that I skied by these two runs so often for alternative runs that preside nearby; it will never happen again. Brakeman and Coupler, this post goes out to you.

Well, if you’re ever in the area, please check out the huge boulders on Coupler. Or you could just look at these photos:

Trip Report 5

Yea, it's been a few weeks since you all have seen an update. Well, not much to report for the most part except that the skiing at WP/MJ has been outstanding to say the least.

Here's a few photos from the weekend before Christmas.

So, not much to report for the most part. However, Hurricane and I skied just about the entire mountain from side to side. We difinitely agreed that Gambler on the Vasquez side was easily the best run of the day.

Timberline Lift finally opened. Good turns up high just about anywhere you went. Me, O headed towards the trees way skiers left as usual. John Jct and Kinicinic were better than most runs I skied on saturday.

Weekend Wire III

Wow. Only about 4 feet of snow fell since my last report. What a weekend it was no matter where you skied – well, Saturday for that matter. Lets get right to it.

I’ll get this out of the way first… try not to ski when there’s 40mph gusts… That was all day on Sunday. Ug. Talk about cold.

Saturday on the other hand was one of the better powder days I’ve skied at Winter Park. 2’-3’ stashes were to be had everywhere. It was just about enough snow to ski before it becomes too insanely deep. See, when skiing at Winter Park, once snow gets past say 3’, you’ll need the black diamond runs in order to gain enough speed. With all the cat tracks and crappy flats, navigation on the other hand is tricky with deep snow.

Well, the day started waiting in line at the C-lift promptly at 8:25am – enough for about the 30th chair. From there, I poked around on a few runs just off the C-chair until they really started to get tracked out a very short time later and the lift lines weren’t getting any shorter. I wasn’t too happy about that…. Heck with you MJ; I went over to the Winter Park side. Good decision. The Eskimo Lift family of bump runs was practically untouched at 10pm. This includes Reta’s, Outrigger, Bradley’s and Balch (especially the trees in between Reta and Rigger, shhhhhhh).

I skied these few runs along with my usual weekly Jabberwocky run most of the late morning and past lunch. Then, my legs about shut down on my around 2pm – I was toast. Time for some tail-gating in the C-lot.

Sunday on the other hand was a nightmare. Yes, there was plenty of left-over used powder to ski but the wind and cold weather made the morning useless for my tired ski legs. Talk about ice cube feet…I had to take a break around 10am in order to gain some circulation back in my toes so I could make a damn ski turn without performing a total yard-sale. I took a nice hour break in the lodge with many other people with similar issues as mine. Yea, I don’t work well with high wind gusts that create a minus 30 wind chill. I was in my car by noon and outta there.

Anyways. Here are a few photos from the best pow day before Xmas that I ever experienced.

Well, all in all it was a great weekend, though, I forgot about a very important rule that I now live by: winter park mountain is always over looked on a powder day… see you there next time…

Yes.
I can handle the fact that over 100" of snow has already fallen this year at my home mountain. And over 2' of fresh dry pow has landed so far this week. This weekend will be one for the books...

WP/Mary Jane Weekend Trip Report II

Not much to report over a 4-day ski weekend except for the fact I got many first runs down many newly opened Mary Jane trails for the first time this season. It was killer a Thursday to say the least.

Winter Park Weekend Wire I

What a weekend at the Wanker! Over 30 trails open. A plethora of lifts. 40” base. All before thanksgiving. And, to boot, Mary Jane will be opening very soon. In fact, MJ should’ve been open last weekend; however, I imagine there weren’t enough foreign nationals in town to man all the lifts.

Highlights of my weekend include:
-Cruising down the old Apollo lift line on Bradley’s Bash. Perfect semi-large powdery bumps that tamed my newly tuned skis perfectly. WOW. Great to be skiing again.
-The small tree run between Sunspot lodge and the Quick Getaway run were outstanding even though it’s only about 100’ of vert.
-Jabberwocky and Cheshire cat we’re loaded with pow on Saturday – enough for me to get stuck and tip over a few times. However, on Sunday, both runs we’re bumped out. This is good though. No one was up for skiing them. Man, people are such chickens about bumps these days. They missed out on the soft snow that was packed in between every single bump. It was really cool skiing Cheshire bumps because this run is usually reserved for slalom skiers which require a very smooth surface. In other words, Cheshire is always groomed.

Bonus Pub Report: I’m sorry, but if your bar was actually organized and managed properly, people might actually show up and fill up every seat by 5pm. Although they do a good job at keeping the beer flowing.
